Straight Ahead to Your Soul Jazz – miked

A mix of some straight – but not so straight – ahead jazz and spiritual jazz.  To me, all the music in this mix is spiritual, but it may not fit precisely in the spiritual jazz category (like anyone cares).

I’m a huge lover of Jazz, but it’s not what fills up most of my record bins at this point.  This mix is of some records that I’ve picked relatively recently and just wanted to put together a mix of songs I really enjoy and that fit this certain mood.  A good handful of the records are original presses, but not in the best of shape; apologies for the crackling.  It’s an all vinyl mix of originals, re-issues, standards and rarities.

The first track (Sun Ra) was put in as a sort of intro that I could talk over to introduce the mix, but my mic is out and I’m over it. So, for better or for worse, the Sun Ra is there as a soft intro before the insanity of what was meant to be the first track of the mix (Ornette).

Straight Ahead, Spiritual, Free – – Jazz.

If you enjoy, please comment and/or share.

Here’s what I would have said (TRACKLIST WITH COMMENTARY):

The track under me at the moment is the mellow tune Fate In A Pleasant Mood by Sun Ra and his Myth-Science Arkestra.  This track, along with two others from SR in this mix are from the album of the same name as this track from 1965.

We start off the set with just the very intro of Space Odyssey by Marcus Belgrave.  It’s a fantastic track, but just didn’t quite fit this set, so I snagged just the intro –

Which leads us right into some other spaced out insanity from Ornette Coleman – Man On The Moon.  This is definitely the rarest record (45) and song in the mix.  Made to celebrate the moon landing, but was only released in France.  It’s way out there, but a fun listen (thankfully short ; ).  The drums go off on this track and I’m of course a sucker for the weird analogue sounds.

This takes us into a scorcher of a straight ahead but off the rails track from Don Ellis called Natural H. (1961)

We then take it down a notch and start to settle in with a live recording from Lee Morgan’s Live At The Light House.  The song is Neophilia and the highlight is the intro and solo from Bennie Maupin on what I believe is the bass clarinet?  Nuts, so good.

Next is Bobby Hutcherson‘s song Verse.  For me the highlight here is Joe Henderson’s sax solo..whew, this is why we love Joe Henderson.

This brings us into a super moody one from the untouchable Nina Simone – Plain Gold Ring.  This track has just been a long time favorite of mine and try to play it out whenever I have the chance, which is rarely of course.

From Simone’s mournful moodiness we slide into Sun Ra‘s cosmic spiritual moodiness with a another rich tune called Kingdom Of Thunder.  What else can you say about SR.

This is followed by a slight mood change, with a short track from Mary Lou Williams, Miss D.D. off of the highly recommended compilation om Soul Jazz Records called FREEDOM: Rhythm & Sound.

We then head to a household name, John Coltrane, with a deep piece called Spiritual, where we can hear the deep spirituality that resonates in “the house that Trane built”.  We are also blessed with Eric Dolphy on this piece as well, which well…whew…takes us even deeper.

The mix finishes with a masterpiece from Sun Ra called Space Mates.  All I have to say is that my knees nearly buckle every time that flute comes in…

Thanks for listening…now let’s here some Ornette Coleman.

AfroNight in Tokyo @ Drum Song

So now that I’ve moved out of Tokyo I’d like to put up a few entries to say “thanks for the many good memories” to a few Tokyo spots, fellow djs, and people who came out to show their love for the music over the years.

This entry in particular is a shout out to everyone who made our tri-monthly event called AfroNight such an enjoyable little night.  The spot was an ALL reggae bar in Shimokitazawa called Drum Song.

The owner, and dear friend, was open enough to warm up to the idea of an OCCASIONAL non-reggae night when the idea was put to him by fellow Drum Song frequenteuer, Nozomi.  I think Nozomi was about 19 or 20 when I first met her and was just starting to buy some records, so MUCH props to her for putting together this night – and later this mix.  The theme of AfroNight was simply “black music” (that’s actually what the section is called at music stores here) other than reggae, mainly soul, funk etc…   These nights were always SO MUCH fun because they were only every 3 months or so, so we got lots of people to come out in force.  For me, it was just so much fun to play something other than reggae music.  I love me some reggae, but I never intended to be an all reggae dj, but that’s somehow how things worked themselves out while I was in Tokyo.  Anyways, thanks to everyone for this night, especially you Nozomi-chan! Thanks for inviting me to play! Thank You Kaoru at Drum Song, Thank You AfroNight crew, and Thank You Tetsu!

Below are 3 mixes of music typical of the event from myslef, Nozomi, and Tetsu who was our special guest dj for our last event~

AfroNight Mix 1 by me – miked

AfroNight Mix – miked (double click to stream/right click and save as)

This mix is all vinyl of mainly reissues except for a couple originals thrown in at towards the end.  A lot of the stuff can be found out about if you fish around the following labels, which I highly recommend you do, Truth & Soul, Now Again/Soul Cal, Daptone, and Numero Group. All of these labels have dug up some rare and amazing gems for reissue.  There are also a few tracks that were actually recorded relatively recently…over the past few years there have been some incredible releases in the revival soul/funk scene.  As to which songs are reissues and which are actually new recordings…I’ll leave that to you to figure out.

The mix takes you through some banging funk and gritty soul for a while and finishes up with some west coasty 70s goodness.  Great for a sunny day off.   – – There’s a fair amount of artist repetition going on in here, but the mix was just for fun and there were too many 7″s  where I just simply couldn’t decide between side A or B .

Truth & Soul, Now Again/Soul Cal, Daptone, and Numero Group.

AfroNight Mix 2 by Nozomi

It took me a while, but I finally convinced Nozomi to come over to my place and record this mix.  She always claimed to be too much of a beginner, but since the event was coming to end and I was moving back to Nagano – she came through.  Hope to hang out soon again Nozomi-chan!

A great party mix that kept everyone dancing and wanting to drink more!

AfroNight Mix 3 by Tetsu

An Oursoundtracks favorite with his selections of all original Wackie’s vinyl, Tetsu-san also came through on our last event as a special guest.  He played two sets that night, the first kept the Jamaican vibe of our location while still maintaining the soul for the event.  The second was definitely more AfroNight-ish, but unfortunately I only have the first..which is a great set of tunes though..but still more reggae than what one might expect at AfroNight.

I also felt this mix, which I made for our wedding 2 years ago,  is fitting for me to put up on Valentine’s Day 2010 as this year is gonna be a big one for me and the fam!   We’re moving out of Tokyo and back to my wife’s hometown in the mountains at the end of March, starting my own business in May, and having our first kid in June…  So this mix goes out to my wife and soon-to-be daughter ~~~

It’s been quite a while since I put anything up here cause I’ve been away for the holidays.  I really hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe new year holiday.  Hope to have a lot of new mixes coming your way.

miked (oursoundtracks) – Just Because Hip Hop mix

I threw this mix together while trying to figure out what to play at a little party of a friend of mine out here about 2 years ago I guess.  It had been years since I tried mixing hip hop (you can find some old hip hop mixes of mine in the hop hop section), it was fun to do again, but as you can hear, I’m always shaky when it comes to hiphop mixing.  I never put this mix up cause there was some mixing that I just couldn’t bare at the end, but I just cut that off ; )   Again, I’m no expert dj but I hope you can enjoy the tunes.  After listening to this again it makes me want to make another hip hop mix with some newer stuff; hopefully I’ll get around to that someday soon.

The mix starts out with some soul sounds, but moves on quickly enough to the beats.  Tons of love goes out to a couple labels “featured” on here: Stones Throw and Fondle Em – and also to the sound of the Visioneers.  (I’m sure everyone is hip on the brilliance of Stones Throw Records, but the less known, now extinct Fondle ‘Em Records is also NOT TO BE MISSED check here and here. Kool Keith, Godfather Don, MF Doom, Mf Grimm, Company Flow – they all were there.)

このmixの中、Stones Throw Records, Fondle ‘Em Records, and Visioneersが注目です!

ENJOY – (If you listen…leave a commet, let us know what you think…please?   !!)

J Rocc – Blue Note Mixtape

*Note from OURSOUNDTRACKS – As much as possible, I try to avoid putting up mixes that I just found on the net.  However, there are times when some mixes just need to be shared, and this is one.  I’ve got about 3 mixes lined up to be recorded, but just haven’t had the chance to get them done.  Also have a couple mixes from friends I need to get up as well… BUT IN THE MEAN TIME, enjoy this scrounged mix.  Thank You Rappcats/Stone Throw.

J.Rocc BlueNote

If you don’t already know, J Rocc is one of the premier DJs in the hip hop world.  Beat Junkie crew founder and Stones Throw Records‘ main DJ.  I’ve seen the guy play heaps of times back in LA, and at the Dilla Ruff Draft rerelease here in Tokyo…the man is the man.  Here again, he is taking us to school, bringing us some great Blue Note originals together with their later hip hop counterparts.  Nice! chilled out mix.

I found this mix originally on Rappcats, which is a great site for all kinds a goodies in the hip hop world; especially Madlib, Dilla, Doom etc. related stuff.  Make sure to check it from time to time.  Here’s what’s written about the mix:

Blue Note has just released “Droppin’ Science: Greatest Samples From The Blue Note Lab” – a collection of records from their back catalog which have been sampled for tracks by Dilla, Dre, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Pete Rock, and many others.

J Rocc has these records and many of the records that sampled them, and J Rocc cannot stop making incredible mixtapes ….
