Dublab.jp Test-Run Radio Mix by miked

dublab radio

First radio style mix I ever made, talking while keeping the turntables ready is definitely a task that takes some getting used to. This was for live broadcast at dublab.jp. Dublab.jp just got up and going and has been broadcasting every Wed. night from 8-10pm (Tokyo time). I broadcast an hour every month or two.

In trying to keep both the international audience and the Japanese audience in the loop,  speak a bit of both…  Also, it was recorded in one shot and much of the time the volume on the speaking parts is too quite..thanks for your understanding.

The weather had been rainy so the first half of the set is rather mellow, just setting a mood. The second half gets way more beat oriented with some well known artists and locals as well.
Enjoy! You can hear and download the whole two hour program (second half by the great AZZURO) here: http://dublab.com/mike-davis-and-azzurro-dublab-jp-radio-test-run-live-from-malmo-tokyo-04-24-13/ ミックスを作った日が雨でしたので、前半はけっこうゆっくりな感じで、後半はビートが入ってきます、聴いてみてください。

60s 70s Soulful Jamaican Rocksteady, Soul, Early Reggae mix by miked

Roy+Shirley    Alton Ellis

This is a mix of all 45s, some originals (most in shoddy condition) and but mainly re-issues.  Musically, I would say the theme is Soul influenced Rocksteady and Reggae, but there are some straight up good ol’ reggae tunes as well.  My intent wasn’t to put together a Jamaican soul mix, rather  I just gathered some core soulful tunes I knew I wanted in the mix and built around that vibe. Good tunes for a slow skank on a Sunday!

I also somewhat intentionally built the mix around lyrical content as well.  Trying to touch on a few major hot topics found in Jamaican music…love, spirituality, social consciousness, marijuana, and good vibes; in that basic order.   Musically I feel like this is the kind of mix I could listen to on a Sunday morning or afternoon with my kids, however, lyrically there are a couple shady ones in their.  Of course, this is a another major part of the genre so I’m happy to have it in there.  The main tracks I’m talking about are; the first track whose sexual innuendo, if you can even call it that, is comically outlandish; there’s a Wailers track condemning women as “the root of all evil”, and there’s the marijuana track that you may not want your 8 year old singing along to…  Therefore, I even have put up a “clean” version which eliminates the first track and the marijuana track haha.  The full version of course is recommended.

At any rate, if you enjoy the mix, please spread the word about the word and this site.  Much love to everyone and thanks for listening and reading.

Helmet Mix – by Will Elder

WOw..This is rare.  I have two mixes in two months that were passed on for Oursoundtracks.  Both coming from extremely excellent souls that I’ve had the pleasure to come across in funny ways that only fall into line when you live in some strange land like Japan.  Last month was from a dear soul, Moorieman in Germany, this time from my man Will in Australia.  I actually met Will at an excellent outdoor electronic music festival out here in Japan called Labyrinth last year.  We were introduced by a mutual friend who was DJing at the event.  We chatted a good few times over the weekend and he promised me a mix of some good laid back house tunes…almost a year to the day he came through.  Thanks SOO much will, it’s a pleasure putting up a splendid mix from a being such as yourself.
I believe this mix was also passed out to guests at a party they had in Australia..thus the flier above.

If you are into laid back, minimal house or house flavored techno I really think you’ll enjoy these sounds.  As an extra cherry on top the mix starts with some tasty oldies and one of my all time favorites since I was 10 years old, Depeche Mode.  Love it.   Thanks again Will.    By all means, get working on the next mix and pass it along.

1. An excerpt from Position Normal – Goodly Time
2. Mikado – Message De Noel
3. Kraftwerk – Home Computer
4. Depeche Mode – Strangelove (Blind Mix)
5. Move D – Eastman
6. DJ Sprinkles + Mark Fell – Say It Slowly (N.U.M. Mix)
7. Roger 23 – Looking For A Title But I Haven’t Found One Yet
8. Terre Thaemlitz – Rosary Novena For Gender Transitioning (Homosexual Spirits)
9. Voyectra – Fu Bong
10. Pigon – Kamm (Tobias Version)
11. Yoni – Spirit Of Adventure (Frontier Mix)
12. Air Raid Siren [from Acoustic High-End Research – Running Back
Presents Strada Professional Sound Effects]
13. Cross Fade Enter Tainment – Break It Down

The New Human 新しい人間 mix by Moorieman

The New Human 新しい人間 mix by Moorieman

Here’s a mix from one of the longest contributors to this site and someone who I always take great joy in sharing music with.  This mix was made in 2006 in Berlin and rings of nostalgia for me in many ways.  It has some tracks from artists that were favorites of mine in years gone past (not that they still aren’t favorites).  Lots of goodness in here that you won’t here everyday, definitely check it out.

Here are words from Moorie on the mix:

“Between beauty and noise. That was my life back then. I fell madly in love. I confronted my fears and suddenly everything was possible. I felt like a new human with limitless creativity, ideas and energy. Although there was a lot of disturbing noises everywhere around I lost myself in inspiration. Music and love, that was the beauty I had always looked for. And there it was ready for the taking. My love for inspirational music that invades your mind and gives you that feeling of being liberated, being melancholic, sometimes destructive – all this gave me the idea of what it means to be a human being. It’s all about your emotions…   Between beauty and noise. Between life and death… . A beautiful memory of things that could have been, but in the end only the noise remained and the music.

Approximate track list:

dario marianelli – evey reborn
japanese synchro system – pure finger in deep river
boris – parting
michael andrews – the tangent universe
terry callier  – 900 miles
mas – griph miroque’s edit
piana  –  snow bird
charalambides – our bed is green
boredoms   – super are
aerial m  – confessions for m
nido – elilis
shuji inaba – fate & fortune
icarus – essen

Fruiting Bodies @ Bonobo

Fruiting Bodies mix @ Bonobo in Tokyo by miked

So last week I had the pleasure of playing at the first event put on by dublab.JP.  This is the soon to be functioning Japanese arm of Dublab, which is certainly an exciting development for the Japanese music community.  I also had the pleasure of playing along side two of my favorite “local” djs in Tokyo Dj Shhhhh and Hara Masaaki and two great film/animation creators from the states Overature and Jordan Kim along with Kabeyah and Michael J. Foks.  The event was one of the smaller of a few events Overature where doing while here in Japan and was held at a small, but fantastic location: Bonobo.  It has a cozy atmosphere and an impeccable sound system. The people were all truly great and supportive.  I had a wonderful time listening and watching the performances and talking to customers, staff and artists.

For me, this was perhaps my first time to dj out somewhere and not play a set of strictly one genre.  Sure I’ve played some funk and soul in reggae sets, and jazz in hip hop ones, but for this event I was more focused on just creating a certain kind of mood rather than sticking to a genre.  However, although there are various genres of music the set is of course still limited by that mood I was trying to create; so it’s not really an all genre mix either.  Still, I’ve pretty much never had the chance to play most of this stuff out anywhere so it was sooo much fun, and I really hope to be able to have more chances to play sets that push my boundaries more.

One downside for me and playing a more free-form set is that I couldn’t keep it all vinyl.  I love me some records, and this was my first time using cds in public before.    I’m a massive fan of all genres of minor music, but due to limited funds have mainly collected records of the genre that I was able to play out in public most at any particular period in my life.  Therefore, as far as records go, I have a healthy amount of Reggae, Soul/Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Minimal Techno.  All other genres are sparse.  In the last two years I’ve started my own struggling business and had a daughter so there is pretty much no chance of buying records for a while.  Thus, I may have to reluctantly turn more and more to the digital format, at least for the time being.

A couple words on the set…

This is basically the set as I played it accept for a couple tracks that I ended up leaving out that night due to having only one hour to play.

I’m always curious to see how some Japanese music goes over with people who have no connection with Japan to influence their taste.  There are two tracks by one of my favorite Japanese artists who started in the 70s, Asakawa Maki (You can find a tribute mix I did for her on Dublab here).  I was initially going to put one in, but then got a request for some Asakawa Maki a couple days before the event so I went ahead and put two in.

The track in between the two Asakawa Maki tracks is a song that I have on a 7″ given to me by my wife’s father.  Knowing that I collect records, he one day came up to me and said “Here, I wrote this song”.  Sure enough there was his name on the label next to “lyrics”.  He said there was some lyric writing contest and he won.  I put it on expecting the worst, but my ears perked up as I heard the opening bassline and fell in love with it as the backing vocals and harmony kicked in.  Not sure what someone with no connection to Japan might think of it, but it goes over extremely well with a Japanese audience.

That’s all I really have to say about the mix.  Have a listen, hope you enjoy.

Straight Ahead to Your Soul Jazz

Straight Ahead to Your Soul Jazz – miked

A mix of some straight – but not so straight – ahead jazz and spiritual jazz.  To me, all the music in this mix is spiritual, but it may not fit precisely in the spiritual jazz category (like anyone cares).

I’m a huge lover of Jazz, but it’s not what fills up most of my record bins at this point.  This mix is of some records that I’ve picked relatively recently and just wanted to put together a mix of songs I really enjoy and that fit this certain mood.  A good handful of the records are original presses, but not in the best of shape; apologies for the crackling.  It’s an all vinyl mix of originals, re-issues, standards and rarities.

The first track (Sun Ra) was put in as a sort of intro that I could talk over to introduce the mix, but my mic is out and I’m over it. So, for better or for worse, the Sun Ra is there as a soft intro before the insanity of what was meant to be the first track of the mix (Ornette).

Straight Ahead, Spiritual, Free – – Jazz.

If you enjoy, please comment and/or share.

Here’s what I would have said (TRACKLIST WITH COMMENTARY):

The track under me at the moment is the mellow tune Fate In A Pleasant Mood by Sun Ra and his Myth-Science Arkestra.  This track, along with two others from SR in this mix are from the album of the same name as this track from 1965.

We start off the set with just the very intro of Space Odyssey by Marcus Belgrave.  It’s a fantastic track, but just didn’t quite fit this set, so I snagged just the intro –

Which leads us right into some other spaced out insanity from Ornette Coleman – Man On The Moon.  This is definitely the rarest record (45) and song in the mix.  Made to celebrate the moon landing, but was only released in France.  It’s way out there, but a fun listen (thankfully short ; ).  The drums go off on this track and I’m of course a sucker for the weird analogue sounds.

This takes us into a scorcher of a straight ahead but off the rails track from Don Ellis called Natural H. (1961)

We then take it down a notch and start to settle in with a live recording from Lee Morgan’s Live At The Light House.  The song is Neophilia and the highlight is the intro and solo from Bennie Maupin on what I believe is the bass clarinet?  Nuts, so good.

Next is Bobby Hutcherson‘s song Verse.  For me the highlight here is Joe Henderson’s sax solo..whew, this is why we love Joe Henderson.

This brings us into a super moody one from the untouchable Nina Simone – Plain Gold Ring.  This track has just been a long time favorite of mine and try to play it out whenever I have the chance, which is rarely of course.

From Simone’s mournful moodiness we slide into Sun Ra‘s cosmic spiritual moodiness with a another rich tune called Kingdom Of Thunder.  What else can you say about SR.

This is followed by a slight mood change, with a short track from Mary Lou Williams, Miss D.D. off of the highly recommended compilation om Soul Jazz Records called FREEDOM: Rhythm & Sound.

We then head to a household name, John Coltrane, with a deep piece called Spiritual, where we can hear the deep spirituality that resonates in “the house that Trane built”.  We are also blessed with Eric Dolphy on this piece as well, which well…whew…takes us even deeper.

The mix finishes with a masterpiece from Sun Ra called Space Mates.  All I have to say is that my knees nearly buckle every time that flute comes in…

Thanks for listening…now let’s here some Ornette Coleman.

Low Key Techno circa 1999? Bedroom Mix – miked (oursoundtracks)

So initially I bought turntables to play techno music. This was the final mix I made while still living at my parents house – wow – so long ago. I moved out around ’99 or so so this mix must be from around then. You can tell it’s dated by the fact that it was recorded in two 45min halves in order to be put on tape. I initially played fairly aggressive stuff, but this mix marked my departure into a bit mellower realm of techno…heavy on keys. This mix probably consists of 50% or more of california artists (such as..Kit Clayton, John Tejada, Dean DeCosta), but also includes a healthy dose of others. There are quite a few tracks from Force Inc’s “Force Lab” series, some Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Chain Reaction..etc. Side B gets a little more aggressive. As with all of my mixes on here, they were practice mixes, not intended for sharing, but so much time has passed, and I never got around to re-attempting any of them…so enjoy the good sounds along with the mistakes (like messing around with doubles for too long at the end of side B).

Side A starts with a long intro of an old Kit Clayton track that goes into a Mouse On Mars track, then back into another Kit Clayton track off the Plug Research “Lunch Box” series..before we start getting into some beats.
